In late 1888, a series of brutal murders took place in the impoverished Whitechapel district of London. At least five women were attacked. The killer liked slitting the throat of the victims. The victims’ abdomens were then sliced and several organs were removed. This serial killer became known as Jack the Ripper. Jack the Ripper’s killing spree is believed to have ended with the murder of Mary Jane Kelly on 9th November 1888. But no one can be certain that Jack the Ripper never killed again, because he was never caught.
The five victims usually attributed to Jack the Ripper were all London prostitutes. The first was Mary Ann Nichols, who was murdered on 31st August 1888. She was a 43 year-old woman from a broken-down marriage. After a short turn as a prostitute, Mary Ann managed to acquire a position as a domestic servant. Tragically, she became dissatisfied with the position and left.
