Creationism is the name given to the belief that God created the universe and everything in it, including life. In the West, the word is usually associated with the account of creation given in the book of Genesis in the Christian and Jewish bibles, but it can apply equally to the foundation stories of other religions, such as Islam and Hinduism. There are various forms of creationism, each associated with a different interpretation of scripture and with different views about its impact on current scientific thinking.The book of Genesis says that ‘in the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth’, and that the whole world was created in six days. On the sixth day God created Adam and Eve, who were instructed to ‘be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it’. The belief that the first people were created by God in his image is the reason why some creationists dispute an account of human history based on evolution.
