Shari’a Law is the law of the religion of Islam. The ‘Shari’a’ means the ‘path’ Muslims should follow if they are to lead good lives. Shari’a Law regulates not only human relationships between individuals, like other legal systems. It also regulates human relationships with God. Therefore, the Shari’a is much more than a law as Westerners know it. It is an entire way of life for Muslims.

To understand Shari’a Law, it is necessary to become familiar with the teachings of Islam. Muslims follow the prophet Muhammad, who was born in the city of Mecca in 570 CE. Muhammad became disenchanted with corruption in the religions he saw around him. After meditating on spiritual matters for many years, Muhammad is said to have received a message from Allah, who Muslims believe is the one true God. Allah told Muhammad to preach to others about returning to him also. Muhammad did this, and that is how the religion of Islam began. Abu Bakr was Muhammad’s close friend. He compiled in a book the things Allah told Muhammad. This book was called the Qur’an, and became the sacred text of Islam. Today, one of the key ways Muslims learn how to worship and how to behave towards others is by following the Qur’an.
