In its long and diverse history, trade has promoted communication between countless communities. And it has been concerned with the exchange of countless goods from local markets to national economies.Scientists have found evidence that ancient hunting tribes traded for flint more than 150,000 years ago. Such trade enabled these tribes to gain products they could not make or find in their own territory. And as such actions pre-dated currency, these ancient tribes traded through a bartering system. Bartering means the exchange of one product for another.Trade has been a key part of every civilisation in history. Thousands of years ago, Ancient Egyptians traded rare jewellery for animals, tools and even ice! Soon after, Europeans trekked the famous Silk Road in search of oriental wonders. This amazing route stretched for thousands of kilometres through mountains, oceans and deserts, connecting China to the Mediterranean Sea. It is an example of a great early international trading system. And through it, exotic goods such as spices were brought to Europe.
