This is Spinal Tap is considered by many the quintessential rockumentary, a study of an aging and once great rock and roll band on the path to self-destruction. Cult film Best in Show offers a fascinating look at the cutthroat world of prize dog shows, and in doing so gives us an insight into relationships and the human condition. Box-office smash hit Borat was a memorable portrait of an outsider and made an unlikely Kazakhstani journalist an international superstar. These three films are all look and sound like examples of the documentary genre. Although they all investigate very different people, places and events they all share one key characteristic that differentiates them from most documentaries. None of it is real. They’re all make-believe – stand out examples of a cinematic genre subset, the mockumentary.
