Beautiful horses, well-dressed players and ancient cultures—welcome to polo. Polo is one of the only sports in the world that relies more on the power of an animal than that of a human. Polo has evolved with the world’s cultures, creating new variations as it has spread. But, at the heart of polo, is a shared love of horses and a respect for tradition, two requirements that have helped it earn its famous nickname—“the sport of kings.”The word “polo” actually comes from the Tibetan word “pulu” which means “ball.” Historians believe polo originated around the 6th century BC in either Iran or Persia, where it was first used as practice for cavalry units. These units were the highest ranking in the military, often referred to as the “King’s Guards.” More than 100 soldiers would train their horses and practice their battle skills by hitting a ball to the opponent’s goal. As Persia conquered more lands, this drill caught on as an effective national sport.
