The roar of the crowd. The laughter from the stalls. The gentle breeze of a summer’s day. All of this and more encompasses you as you watch a performance at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. The theatre is situated on the South bank of the Thames River in London.

The Globe Theatre that visitors flock to today is actually a replica of the original. The first incarnation was founded in 1599 by a group of thespians, one of whom was William Shakespeare. Around this time, in the latter half of the 16th century, there was a great flourishing of the theatre in England. It had the support of everyone from Queen Elizabeth I to the peasants who used to stand in front of the stage during performances and throw rotten food at the actors if they weren’t entertained. Shakespeare is still universally loved for his ability to appeal to both superficial enjoyments and deeper analysis, and the wide variety of spectators in Elizabethan playhouses would have reflected this. The great demand for theatre ensured the playhouses of The Curtain Theatre, the Rose, the Swan, the Globe and the Fortune were all built between 1577 and 1600.
